This Day Is Music History

By: SportsGuyMike – The Morning Boom Box

On this day in music history, one of the most influential R&B and Soul singers was born. Marvin Gaye, singer, songwriter who had a 1968 US No.1 & 1969 UK No.1 single with ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ and a 1982 US No.3 & UK No.4 single with ‘Sexual Healing’. Gaye was a member of the doo-wop group The Moonglows in the late 1950s, and then signed with Motown Records subsidiary, Tamla.

After an argument with his father, Marvin Gaye Sr, it escalated into a physical fight on the morning of April 1, 1984 a day before his birthday, Alberta Gay was trying to calm her son in his bedroom when Marvin Sr. took a revolver given to him by Marvin Jr. and shot him three times in his chest.

He was crowned “The Prince of Motown” and “The Prince of Soul”. His music lives on from generation to generation.

Here are a few of his most famous songs.
